In 1868 the agency became a branch in its own right.

MS Word document on the bank at Dunolly. There is no photo of the original Bank of Victoria 1856-1860 at 92 Broadway, Dunolly.  The Bank of Australasia photo 1861 is the building that became the Bank of Victoria from 1865-1871.
2009 September Geoff Chapman forwarded Google Earth image of ex-CBC premises built 1958 at 72 Broadway, that being the site of Bank of Australasia from 30/12/1858, then Bank of Victoria, then CBC from 1927. The premises have been slightly altered since rebuilt in 1958; now Goldsearch Australia.

It is logical that a branch would be established in Echuca in the 1800’s due to its importance as a river port.

1862 Bank of Victoria opened in temporary premises, then in 1863 moved to premises purchased at 591 High Street Echuca, built 1858/1860  (This property was originally numbered 622 but the street was renumbered in 1950’s).

On Heritage Victoria website a branch of the Bank of Victoria is listed as located at 622 High Street Echuca.

Notes on the Heritage Website provide the following information:
It was the original Bank of Victoria which opened in 1863. Built between 1858-1860 the attractive building has double doors opening onto a wooden railed balcony.  French windows opened onto a brick paved, vine covered verandah at the rear. The front office featured a large cedar counter.  This is a two storey building with an upper floor wooden railed balcony. There was a residence at the rear and above the branch.  In 1864 cement rendering was applied to the building. (Heritage Victoria)

The first manager was E Gillies. Other managers were J L Archer (1868), A Boyd (1873), D Mills (1875), M F Condrick (1890).

Due to the general recession, the branch was closed on 30/12/1894 and the business transferred to Elmore.

Following the closure of the Bank, a Dr Fowler resided and practiced in the early 1890’s. It was then used as a Church of England Girls Grammar School between 1902-1907.  The Rev Arthur Tress was responsible for the funding of the school.

1907 McKenzies and Co, Stock & Station Agents purchased the building.  After using it for some time it was leased to a private family and was then sold to become the Aerlex Factory in 1946.  1962 It was purchased by the Central Tyre Service. (Heritage Victoria)

The building now houses a cafe and 3 safes are still in the banking chamber which is now used as the main dining area of the cafe.

2009 July four photos by David Jobson, who states:
"A nice example of a Bank of Victoria branch which was opened in 1892 and now houses the local Historical Society.

A nearby Estate Agent said that after the local NAB moved out of it some twenty years ago into new premises, the local Council demolished a hotel across the street and in doing so, caused damage to the bank building with the demolition explosives. Council then had to purchase the building for the Historical Society.

A couple more pics of the residence side entrance and tiled mosaic pattern".

Possum Hill
1876
2009 September Geoff Chapman advised:
Following a gold strike at Possum Hill in 1876, the Bank of Victoria established a branch using a transportable building. Date of closure is unknown, but in 1881 the disassembled building was lying in the rear yard of the Bank's Dunolly branch, in anticipation of being re-erected should another gold strike be made in the area. Unfortunately this never happened. In the photo it is impossible to identify the staff
2019 November Geoff Chapman provided
the image of the Bank of Victoria premises erected at Possum Hill following the gold strike there. When the gold was depleted, the structure was dismantled and transported back to Dunolly and stored in the yard of those branch premises for future use if required, which it never was.  Photo supplied to Geoff by John Tully, Dunolly Museum.

THE GIPPSLAND TRAGEDY - Latest Details Melbourne, November 20.
Mrs. SHORT, who was shot at Sale, in Gippsland, yesterday morning by her husband, who also cut the throats of his two children, and afterwards committed suicide, still remains in about the same condition. She is not allowed to talk, but has communicated everything in writing, being fully conscious of all the dreadful reality. Her father, the Rev. Mr. PUCKLE, of Melbourne, and her mother and sister, arrived at Sale last night, but her parents were only allowed a brief interview with the sufferer. Mr. Harry SHORT, the deceased man's brother, also came to Sale last night. Mr. PUCKLE says that he would not have known his daughter, so disfigured is she.
The inspector of the Commercial bank, of which SHORT was the local manager, arrived at Sale at midday yesterday. He is very reticent, but it appears as though SHORT had sent for him. He evidently had arranged that, was well as everything else, before carrying out the tragedy At the inquest on the bodies of the victims, a verdict that SHORT killed his two children and shot himself while in a state of insanity was returned. Mr. WALKER inspector of the Commercial Bank, said the deceased had probably been troubled about the business of the bank for some time.

Geoff Chapman advised:
Image of an unknown date shows Bank of Victoria in Hogan Street Tatura.  Retrieved from Trave with acknowledgement to Tatura Irrigation & Wartime Camp Museum.

The Victorian style of the building behind the facade supports that. The facade is typical CBC 1960’s architecture.

Window2016 May Rhys Bennett advised: I am renovating my shed and within it is an old frosted glass window, measuring (1900mm x 1800mm), with the lettering “Bank of Victoria Limited” on it.

I am trying to find out a bit more information about it and had wondered if your organisation might be interested. I am told it was originally from a bank in Colac Victoria, but haven’t been able to find any more info on this

I stumbled upon the Officers' website by accident and it has given me a lot of information. I have an Application for Membership on the way to your Treasurer by snail mail.
My CBC history is on that form but briefly I joined the bank in January 1958 from school and resigned in December 1976 because we didn't want to shift any more - certainly not from Australia's best-kept- secret-city, Adelaide.
My query to the Club is, given that you have accumulated a lot of memorabilia, are you interested in a folder (photo attached) of Bank of Victoria "Official Memoranda" sheets, which I have had for many years and was to be thrown out at Merbein Vic branch when I was there in about 1960? The folder appears to be leather but it's in a fairly run-down condition.
There are some 40 odd Instruction sheets therein many of which make very interesting reading, and they go back to the early 1900's. If you don't take them I'm sure our offspring will "bin" them when we are gone.

2016 June Our Archivist, Noel Crowley now has the satchel, thanks Gary.
