Macquarie Street Store, 35 Macquarie Street, East Circular Quay | 1957 1972

| 1950s "Storage space became overtaxed so it was decided to buy a site in Macquarie St near the Opera House for a bulk store to house records" is what is stated in Current Accounts 1980 December Pg 24 but it is understood an executive committed the Bank to buying the building when he bid at auction for it. When he told the General Manager of his action the GM was not impressed, so the executive said "If the Bank doesn't want it I will buy it myself", so the Bank bought it.

Noel Crowley says the top level was used as temporary managerial accommodation as early as 1959. Temporary Residences, warehouse and garage for GM's vehicle. 1970s Top floor above Macquarie Street housed David Smith when he came from USA to Sydney Automation. When David Smith arrived in Australia they put him up there. One of the Premises ladies showed him around. He said “What is that?” when shown the laundry. "That’s a copper, Mr. Smith". It suddenly disappeared shortly thereafter. 1972 Macquarie Street from the air from Oswald Ziegler Enterprises, with CBC Store 3rd building from the right, sourced by John Beer. John Ness believes the Macquarie Street store was sold for about $400,000 around 1972. Some of us thought it would make a good International Division HQ. 1970s Management was faced with major decisions what to do about lack of storage space when it was decided to sell Macquarie St & lease premises elsewhere. 1979 November the move was made to Alexandria Records Store 2006 Now part of the "toaster" - photo of site by John Beer. |
