1954 The building is decorated to celebrate the arrival in Queensland of Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh on the 9th March 1954. Built at a time when the 'Valley' was the premier shopping and entertainment district in Brisbane, this bank branch replaced the earlier building (1887). It looks to be constructed from Helidon sandstone, quarried out west towards Toowoomba and is clearly modern in design with Art Deco accents. I like the pineapple motifs in relief.
The Valley's fortunes faded in the 1970s as suburban shopping centres sprang up and as businesses folded, the Valley became grubby. No doubt, the bank closed during this time. On a happier note, during the 1990s the Valley developed as the live music and clubbing spot in Brisbane and the bank building is now a bar. |
