Kingsmill

  • E E H Kingsmill retired as Manager Elizabeth Street Sydney on 29/9/62. Previously Manager Gundagai, Inverell and Tamworth, and Assistant Manager Brisbane Office.  "He takes pride in the fact that his son is the 3rd generation of the family to serve the Bank".  EEH Kingsmill spoke as Retired Manager Tamworth at Tamworth's N & NW Branches Dinner celebrating CBCofS Tamworth Centenary October 1969
  • Marwood Kingsmill is believed to have been son of EEH Kingsmill and working in Tasmanaia and Manager Gloucester then to WA where he resigned to join something like Electricity Commission or Water Board.  Marwood's wife is believed to have had some British Royal distinction (John Beer May 2007)

Lamb

  • Commander John Lamb R.N. 1834 Deputy Chairman of 1st CBCofS Board; 1848-49 Chairman of CBCofS Board.

  • Commander John Lamb's 3 sons Walter J Lamb, Alfred Lamb and John de Vere Lamb were Directors / Auditors till 1898.

  • Cyril J Lamb 1888-1937, third generation was Manager Delegate, Quirindi, Kiama.
    CJ Lamb was the grandfather of:

    • Felicity Welsch (see Robertson WG connection) and also

    • Cuthbert B Lamb 1899-1914, who were followed by 4th generation:-

      • Christian S Lamb 1925-26, now Mrs DN Hindmarsh;

      • Richard (Dick) H Lamb 1938-1990s, Manager Pittsworth Qld and Manager Mitchell Q 1965-1970); and

      • Clyde O. Lamb 1935-1990s. Clyde was Accountant at CBC Cootamundra 1962?, then Manager Quandialla 1960-66, later manager Kyogle, then Warren, retiring as Manager Dubbo.  His children:

        • Patricia, daughter of Clyde, employee of Cootamundra CBC who John Beer used to swim with in Barmedman mineral Pool at weekends when Lamb family came to Barmedman mineral pool from Quandialla.

        • John O. Lamb, son of Clyde was a relieving Manager, then manager Cobar and Ulladulla.  For some years he was Secretary of Australian Rough Riders Assn, (Rodeo riders - horses and bulls) and a real country boy.

  • All above Lambs are descendants of Commander John Lamb (see pages 10 & 11 Current Accounts January 1970).

  • Richard P. Gillan 1961-1969 was also a descendant.

Lindsay

  • Mr. Bob (R.A.) Lindsay joined at Bellingen in 1920. Was Manager Beckom in 1936 the Parkes, Wagga and was manager Parramatta, from where he went to manager Haymarket. He retired from Haymarket on 10th February 1967 (from Current Accounts July 1967 Page 47).

  • His son Roger H.S. Lindsay was manager Mona Vale 1973-74 and it is thought later Manager Macquarie University (John Beer).

Luscombe

  • Harry A. Luscombe, was Manager Yass 1970 June 30 CBC Annual Report.
  • His daughter, Helen Luscombe of Head Office married Pat Shannon from Parramatta. (from Current Accounts, Jan 1968, Page 65)

  • Bert  Luscombe was born on 7th March 1908.  He died on 18th January 2009.

  • W.A. (Jim) Luscombe was born on 1st February 1906.  He died on 14th July 2008  (our oldest member at 102), and was cremated at Bowral - notice in SMH 23/7/08. A single man who was  many years ago a good member of our Club.  Advised by Les Cornell and Kevin Meyer.

Martin

  • Mr Martin Senior worked in Banking as Manager Muswellbrook for Bank of Australasia, an industry his sons Vic and Peter later joined:

  • Victor Eadric was born in 1923 at Sandgate, Qld.
    1941 Joined CBC at Grafton, then to Woodstock.
    1942 Nov 14 to 1946 Sep 11 served in AIF, Rank: Corporal 2/1 Aust Infantry Battalion
    1046 and later served at Forbes and country locations including Tottenham, and suburban branches.
    1951 to Head Office.

    1954 went Overseas attached to an English Bank & a Canadian Bank for experience.
    1955 International Banking Summer School at Oxford.

    After a short period with National Commercial Banking Corporation of Australia Limited (NAB) as Joint Managing Director, he became a director of Australian Bank.

  • Peter (Edwin Dawes) Martin, Vic Martin's brother was born September 1925 at Sandgate, Qld.
    followed his father into the Banking industry.
    1943 Dec 3 enlisted in RAAF at Sydney
    1946 Mar 29 Discharged as Leading Aircraftsman at RAAF Station Rathmines NSW.
    Held various positions in CBC rising to General Manager, Banking.

Matthews

  • Geoff Matthews’ father had been a manager in Queensland (submitted by Peter Wall)

Maundrell

  • Frank's Mother, Beatrice Ellen Murray (always known as "Bee") was born in 1903.
    She completed her Leaving Certificate at Parramatta High School before joining the Bank in Parramatta,  which would have been about 1920. One of the first female officers to be employed by CBCofS. She worked at Broadway, Head Office (Country Cheques Dept) and it is thought Haymarket. She left the Bank when she married Edwin George Maundrell in 1939. She died in 1975. She always said the staff were hoping for a bonus to mark the Bank's Centenary in 1934, but, largely due to the Depression, were instead given a copy of A Century of Banking. She claimed that many were thrown away in disgust at the time.

  • Her brother John Murray was born in 1889 and worked in Shellharbour (closed in 1907).
    Enlisted during WW1. His name is on the Head Office WW1 Honour Roll. He was offered a Branch Management position as an incentive not to go, but he declined and went anyway.
    Upon his return he served a reorientation period before being appointed Manager. 1950 he retired from Manager Bowral to Port Macquarie until his death on 30/5/1968 (Current Accounts Jan 1969 p.5). He was too old to join the Officers' Provident Fund and, when he retired, was granted a pension, known as a "Grace of the Bank" pension.  His widow, Roberta Murray, was one of the few people to be still receiving such a pension when she died in Port Macquarie in the early 1970's. They had no children.

  • Frank Maundrell was born in 1944 and joined the Bank at Merrylands in 1959.
    Branches at which he worked were:
    1959 - Merrylands - Junior.
    1960 - Pitt & Bathurst Streets, Sydney, mainly Junior.
    1961 - Oxford Street, Sydney, Teller mainly.
    1962 - Seven Hills - 2IC.
    1966 - Overseas Department, Sydney Office (then known as "Head Office") During service there, Frank worked in the Currency Exchange at Sydney Airport twice in one-month stints and a Savings Bank Agency at 1970 Scout Jamboree, Leppington.
    1972 - Petersham - Accountant.
    1975 - Burwood - Accountant.
    1979 - Manilla - Manager.
    1982 - Wee Waa - Manager.
    1986 - Scone - Manager.
    1991 - (Following death of Frank’s wife in 1989) North West NSW Relieving Manager. Served in most Branches in New England and North West, last 3 years mainly in District Office.
    1998 - Retired following redundancy- Still in Tamworth.

  • Frank's sister Ruth Marianne Maundrell (now Campey) was born in 1945 and joined the Bank at Parramatta in 1961. At times, she used to attend the Agencies in Darcy Street and North Parramatta, but Parramatta was her only Branch.  She does not recall an Agency in Parramatta Hospital. She left the Bank just before the birth of her first child in 1969. She is now widowed and lives in Epping. 1968 July Current Accounts Pg 12 shows photo of Parramatta Staff April 1968 including R M Campey.

McConaghy

  • Mr. F W Flatt joined CBCofS in the 1860s. From 1875-1883 he was Manager Terara and in 1883 opened CBCofS Nowra.  His daughter married a Mr McConaghy, whose sons Alexander and James were in the Bank, and another.

  • 1. Alexander was Manager Berry from 1908 to 1918, then Manager Casino to 1922 and Manager Moree from 1922 to 1936.
  • 2. James worked at CBC Pitt & Bathurst Streets and Royal Exchange branches.
  • 3. Mr. McConaghy, who had three sons in the Bank:
    • F.A. McConaghy 1912-1924 of Stratford NQ worked for CBCofS.
    • Alan worked at CBCofS Mayfield.
    • Keith was Manager Surat from 1941 to 1947, Manager Bangalow until 1955 then Manager Kyogle from 1955 to 1963.
      • Keith's son, Peter opened 44 Young Street, Sydney in February 1970.

  • John Munro wrote in January 2009: Browsing through some of my other CBC memorabilia I have come across the publication "A Century of Banking" put out for the CBC Centenary in 1934. I found this book at Moree and inside the front cover is written details of the 1926-1936 Manager at Moree, Alan McConaghy. He joined the Bank 2/8/1885 and retired in 1936. His career was written thus:-
    Head Office - 1 year: Bathurst 7 years Junior & Teller: Nowra 2 years Accountant: Berry 13 years Accountant:
    Manager: Berry Branch 10 years, Casino Branch 3 years, Moree Branch 15 years

McKenzie

  • Jon McKenzie wrote in November 2009: I have recently joined the Officers Club and looking forward to being involved in some of the gatherings which take place.
    I joined CBC Bomaderry sub branch on the 31/1/78. The OIC was Bob Carne and the Manager of Nowra was Cyril Avery, Assist Manager – Denis Malligan, Accountant – Alan McLaren . After 2 years I was transferred to CBC Bankstown. Manager – Ted Elliott, Assist Manager – Geoff Irvine, Accountant - Ross O’Neil then Bruce Burgess, Assist Accountant – Peter Williams. After 2 years I was transferred to Money Market’s settlements area. Manager – Michael Coates, Assist Manager – Wayne Christie. Due to the CBC/NBA merger there was a lot of resignations in the dealing room and as such, I got my opportunity for a dealing role. I have been dealing ever since selling interest rate products to fund managers.

  • I have a brother Ian McKenzie who was in the CBC Bank for many years. In fact when I was browsing through the senior staff 1982 area of the web page, I saw his name as the Camden branch manager at that time. He was the manager of quite a few branches over the years including Miranda, Lithgow and Camden. He celebrated his 70th birthday a couple of weeks ago.

Mead

  • Bill Mead was Manager Cudal, Cobar, Penrith and Crows Nest and then worked with Alan Pitt in marketing

  • Helen Mead, widow of Bill Mead ex manager Crows Nest passed away 14/9/07.

  • Bob Mead passed away in April 2010. He was living at Port Macquarie and funeral was today. Bob retired from Savings Bank Administration. H e was a brother of Bill Mead who passed away some years ago.

Metzler

  • Stan J Metzler was Accountant HO in 1949 when Bill Frost went onto Relieving Staff, CBC Chatswood, passed away 31 July 1966 [1967 January CA Pg 20]

  • Doug R Metzler, son of Stan, was at CBCofS Launceston then Hobart Office 1961 January Pg 45 photo with wife and daughter Sally, later was Accountant Gosford under Bob Moses when Bill Frost relieved Accountant, Manager Narrandera 1970s,  and is thought to have resigned whilst Manager Lindfield. Advised by Bill Frost.

Meyer

  • Kevin A Meyer

  • Kevin Meyer's father-in-law,Charles H. Wisehart joined at Woodstock in 1912. He was appointed to Young branch from where he enlisted in AIF in 1915. He was injured in 1916 in Egypt when he was discharged.
    1916 appointed to Armidale from where in 1917 he re-enlisted and was on the transport "Canberra" when it carried 10 CBCofS staff members as Artillery Reinforcements (Frank Sefton, Bill Leck, Arthur Munro, Eric Harding, Arthur Foulcher, Dick Fraser, Bill Holland, Mr Brown & Mr Wild who left the Bank on their return from the war). 1918 he was in Birmingham hospital when Armistice was signed.
    In 1924 he became Accountant Gilgandra, in 1928 Manager Brewarrina, 1933 Manager Berry and from 1940 to 1958 Manager Nowra from whence he retired on 30th September.
    He took early photos of many branches that have disappeared. They have great historical value and are pictured on this website.

  • Barbara Meyer (nee Wisehart) married Kevin.  Her father was Charles Wisehart. They all worked at Nowra branch.
    Barbara passed away on 24th January 2011.

Middleton

  • K.W. Middleton was Manager Gladstone Qld in 1926, and also manager Gayndah.  He passed away 22nd September 1969 and had three sons working in the Bank:
     

    • Ian  K Middleton 1956 Manager Pilliga, 1970s Manager Epping, and a branch in ACT from where he retired.
       

    • Colin C Middleton's name is on Bourke Strongroom door, later AMP Rep Parkes,
       

    • Alan C. Middleton, known as "Mango", 1955 Audit Clerk with “Banana Bill” J D “Black Jack” Williams, Auditor, Sub-Inspector, Married Betty Stein in 1970 and they lived in a unit at North Sydney. Lived at Blacktown when Manager Blacktown after his marriage. They lived at Seaforth when he was Lending Manager then retired to Forster, overlooking the sea. He died from cancer around 1999.
       

    • Alan's wife Betty, nee Stein worked at Grenfell, then in Personnel Department at Head Office until their marriage in 1970.  They lived in a unit at North Sydney. In late 1971 they had son Scott Campbell Middleton at Paddington Womens Hospital. 
      She is not the Betty Middleton who died on 25th August 2004 aged 85, late of Manly (Manly Daily 28/8/04).

      2010 Betty Middleton nee Stein lives in Grafton.

       

      • Scott Campbell Middleton is Alan C Middleton's son.  He worked at NAB including Kempsey.  Married around 1999 and in 2008 lived with his wife at Caves Beach.  2010 Scott & wife live at Grafton.
        Scott works for a Financial Services Group in Grafton.  Scott is the Risk Specialist for WHK Northern NSW. His services extend through all 14 offices from Armidale across to Coffs Harbour and North to Murwillumbah.
        Scott holds a Diploma of Financial Services and has been advising since 1990. He was previously based in both Sydney and then Newcastle where he worked as practicing Financial Planner who specialised in Risk. He is also an accredited Business Insurance Specialist, and holds qualifications in Succession Planning.
        Based within the Grafton community he is an active member of the Wooli Surf Life Saving Club and enjoys playing cricket, tennis and swimming.
         

Moffat/Moffatt

  • Doug G. Moffatt, who was Manager Walgett in the 1960s; Manager Goulburn Nov 1966 and then Wollongong; later became Assistant Inspector NSW North Western / Western Division under Frank Noble (Details from Bill Frost) and Acting ECM/AGM Banking Services in 1980s, had a daughter and son:-

  • Cathy Moffatt in CBCofS Walgett 1960s until she resigned to pursue a nursing career.

  • Dudley Moffat/Mofatt Dudley AKA Dud or Doug depending on the state of one's hearing:
    1966 November Manager Goulburn.

Molesworth

  • E. Molesworth was Manager Kiama 1878 (Select Documents of 19th Century Volume 2 page 70).

  • Ron E. B. Molesworth was a CBCofS Manager including Orange in October 1969, and had a son:-

  • R.E.B. Molesworth Jnr was working in CBC when he resigned from Lake Cargelligo where he became sick of living in pub in 1967, so bought a newsagency in Coogee area.  2006 Courier business NW Business Park Baulkham Hills & living in Cherrybrook.

  • Harry Denley reports: R.E.B. Molesworth had a daughter Barbara who worked in 343 George Street for a short while. I don’t know if she worked anywhere else but she was in H.O.

Mosely

  • David Graham Mosely was Accountant at Parkes from November 1951 to November 1956, and prior to that was in Head Office, Martin Place, in Overseas Department.  He was appointed Manager Yeoval  in November 1956 when Bill Crandell was the second officer of their small branch during David’s management time. Then he was Manager at Woodenbong branch until about 1964. After that he was appointed Manager at Dungog branch and then Manager at Windsor in about 1969. He chose to complete his service as Relieving Manager for the NSW North Coast from about 1973 (so he could be relatively close to the retirement home he and his wife Heather were building at Emerald Beach, just north of Coffs Harbour). He died in August 1975, aged 61 years, still in the service while relieving as Manager at Kyogle.

  • They had 3 sons Graham, Kevin and Brian.  Heather passed away 8 May 2005 (Graham's birthday and Mothers Day that year).

  • Kevin James Mosely was a Teller at Albury in 1960 and  Audit Clerk in the 1970s and completed his service as a manager on relief staff, and is now living in the Hunter Valley.

  • Brian Ralph Mosely was a Junior at Belmont in 1960. completed his service as Accountant at East Maitland, and also lives in the Hunter Valley.

  • Graham R Mosely and his two-year old daughter, Nerida Ruth Mosely were both customers of Wauchope in 1965.
  • David G Mosely's brother, Alan P Mosely (who still lives at Maroubra) and David's father, Archibald Adolphus Mosely were customers of Maroubra branch for a long period of time around 1960, making four generations, all Moselys CBC customers at the one time. Current Accounts January 1966 (Pg 43) claimed this to be a record.

  • My father worked for the CBC all his working life - He commenced work at Quirindi and strangely I was appointed Accountant at Quirindi on the same day Dad retired from Cessnock Branch where he was 21C.

  • The Canowindra Manager's residence was the old bank.  W M Munckton, the manager, was Michael's father. W M Munckton was retired when he passed away 22 June 1966 (1967 Jan Current Accounts Pg 20)

  • Mike and brother Rob were away at school but the elder sister,
    Annette and the youngest girl Jo were at home.
    1960/70s Mike Munckton was a NSW Relieving Manager.
